Dear Alfred,
2008 has been a pivotal year in drug policy reform. We have taken great strides toward significant change. Our members and speakers were part of an outpouring of support for marijuana initiatives in Massachusetts and Michigan, and in New Hampshire, a decriminalization bill doomed for failure passed the House after a LEAP speaker publicly voiced his support. Our December Repeat Repeal project celebrating the 75th anniversary of the end of alcohol prohibition proved that LEAP has the ability to take on a large-scale project and turn it into a 10% increase in supporters, who signed a letter at www.WeCanDoItAgain.com, automatically sending a message to their personal state and federal legislators, urging them to support the creation of blue ribbon commission that can take a serious look at the real cost of continuing the war on drugs during a time of economic crisis. Repeat Repeal also yielded over 50 media publications on national and internationally syndicated newspapers, radio and television (including The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC TV), as well as 17 meetings with key allies.
The coming year is shaping up to bring us even more opportunity for groundbreaking reform. Our projects in 2009 will have our speakers making a difference in their communities, on college campuses, in the offices of opinion leaders and in the halls of Congress.
As our organization continues to expand, the U.S. economy has reached a disastrous low, and many nonprofit organizations are absorbing a devastating hit. This month, LEAP received notice that three of our major funders will be reducing their financial support by a total of $170,000. We are looking at a financial hit at the very time this nation needs to hear our message. We believe LEAPs goal of ending drug prohibition is too integral to the wellbeing of our society to suffer at the hands of economic downturn and budgetary cuts. Our 2009 budget is $200,000 more than our 2008 budget. LEAP needs you to bridge the gap financially by making your best possible donation today. Stand shoulder to shoulder with us to end prohibition.
Drug prohibition has had a profound effect on our economy: every year that the war on drugs continues costs United States taxpayers billions. These funds are spent despite the fact that 3 out of every 4 Americans believe drug prohibition is a failure. Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron, who joined LEAP for our Repeat Repeal press conference December 2, estimates that legalizing and regulating drugs would boost the economy by at least $76.8 billion a year.
Your tax-deductible contribution to LEAP is an investment in a more stable economic future and a more practical, ethical and effective drug policy. Your support and generosity are what will sustain our organization in moving forward. Please support our mission of educating your neighbors about the myriad harms of the war on drugs. Right now is when the world most needs to be reminded that we ended alcohol prohibition in the midst of an economic crisis. Policy makers had the good sense to know that prohibition was a policy that doesnt work and we cant afford. Every dollar you invest in LEAP is an opportunity to make the message ring loud and clear. We did it once, We Can Do It Again.
Sincerely,
Jack A. Cole
